The peace, love, and joy of connecting
with your Deep Self
Doodling is often thought of as a mindless activity, but recent studies have shown that it can actually have a profound effect on the brain.
By connecting the left and right hemispheres of the brain, doodling can improve memory retention, increase creativity, and enhance overall cognitive function.
The left side of the brain is responsible for logical thinking and language processing, while the right side is responsible for creative and visual thinking.
When we doodle, we engage both sides of the brain, allowing us to process information more deeply and think more creatively.
Dr. Semerit Strachan comes from a lineage, on her motherʼs side, of poets, writers, painters and sculptors. All but one of whom pursued their art as a somewhat hidden side hobby. Even though it was only as an adult that she discovered these artistsʼ work, she is grateful for the genetic seed implanted in her – a seed that persisted through the arduous thirty plus years of the medical training and practice that formed her primary career.
Through that time and world-wide experience, she developed a fascination for Body: bodyʼs wisdom, bodyʼs communication, bodyʼs ability to heal – and ultimately the miraculous experience of being Consciousness in Body. David Whyte, one of her favorite poets and visionary quotes, “We cannot enter a territory for which we do not know the language.” And Semerit became passionate about teaching, or more accurately, reconnecting people to Bodyʼs symbolic language as an essential element in true healing.
This is what attracted her to Intentional Creativity, a step by step method to reconnect people to hidden aspects of themselves. She felt that using this method, she could guide people to truly hear and interpret what their Body was really trying to tell them. She was unprepared for the blossoming of artistic expression that resulted from her immersion into the method. The powerful images of the Feminine and the Inner World that she never knew had been gestating created an even deeper awe of the healing potential of creativity.
Her work is imbued heavily with cultural icons of her African heritage and celebrates boldly our healing and evolutionary potential. Certified as an Intentional Creativity Coach and Teacher of the Color of Woman method, she finds that her coaching, painting, and doctoring have synthesized into an integrated healing art form. She is passionate about reaching a global audience with this art form through paintings, writings, workshops and one on one and group coaching. She envisions and champions the dawning and creation of a new medicine that encompasses the arts, directs patients to their own inner healing force, and is capable of ushering the planet into the evolution required of our Age one body at a time.
After extensive research into neuropsychology, neuroplasticity, left-brain/right-brain integration and mind-mapping, she integrated all of her past experience in medicine, art, healing, and psychology into her "Art is Oxygen" workshop and her "Art is a Healing Walk" online course. She has presented these workshops around the country including versions for the United Nations, and various universities, corporations and governmental agencies.
Her other credentials include: MD from Mt Sinai School of Medicine in NYC, Assistant Director of Primary Health Care for Save the Children, Clinical Faculty of the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Program at the University of Minnesota, Director of Medicine and Fellow at the Cultural Wellness Center in South Minneapolis, and Faculty for the National Pediatric Hypnosis Training Institute.
The right brain is often referred to as the creative and intuitive side, while the left brain is considered the logical and analytical side.
Both hemispheres work together to create a balanced and well-rounded individual, but they also have their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
While the right brain excels in tasks such as visual and spatial awareness, the left brain excels in tasks such as language and problem-solving.
Doodling, as a form of visual expression, engages the right brain and allows for creative thinking and problem-solving.
Doodling can also serve as a tool for accessing and communicating the unconscious thoughts and feelings of the right brain.
This is because doodling allows for the creation of visual representations of abstract ideas, making them easier to understand and process.
On the other hand, the act of doodling also involves the left brain.
When doodling, the individual must focus on the task at hand, which requires attention and concentration.
Additionally, the act of doodling can also involve the use of symbols and patterns,
which requires the individual to use their left brain’s logical and analytical skills.
